SUMMARY:Nothing to Hide: Voices of Trans and Gender Diverse Australia Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:‘This is literature at its finest – tender\, attentive and daring.’ Omar Sakr\, author of Son of Sin \nNothing to Hide is Australia’s first mainstream anthology of trans and gender-diverse writing. \nWhile there has been unprecedented trans visibility in Australia in the last decade\, this visibility has not always been positive\, shadowed at every step by transphobic misinformation and extremist rhetoric. As a counter to the harmful chorus of anti-trans voices\, this collection features the work of thirty trans and gender-diverse people across the spectrum of age\, race\, geography and circumstance. The writers give voice to their communities and tell their own stories\, on their own terms. \nAt this special event\, hear from contributors in conversation with co-editor Sam Elkin. \nAnastasia Le is a Vietnamese immigrant who has spent half of her time on the land of the Wurundjeri people. As a woman of trans experience\, she’s learned to use humour\, her voice to raise awareness for the queer community\, racial issues\, and inequality. \nSasja Sÿdek is a trans woman of colour activist and feminist and advocate who advocates for community and self-love with an empowering message of moving beyond gender expectations to live more authentically. Sasja was the founding member of Trans Sisters United\, a community organisation based in Melbourne that creates projects that benefits the transgender and cis female\, and is also that familiar voice and radio producer at 3CR’s Behind Closed Doors. \nTiff Tan is a chef who works for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Originally from Malaysia\, Tiff has been an outspoken advocate for migrant worker rights in Australia as part of a Hospo Voice wage theft campaign. Tiff lives in the western suburbs of Melbourne. \nSam Elkin is a writer and host of Triple R’s Queer View Mirror. His essays have been published in Kill Your Darlings\, Growing Up in Country Australia and Griffith Review\, and was shortlisted for the 2022 Spark Prize.
