SUMMARY:Queer Social: Kokedama Moss Balls with Maria
DESCRIPTION:Kokedama is an ancient Japanese botanical art like bonsai or ikebana art. The word ‘Kokedama’ means ‘moss ball’ in Japanese as they are plants living in freestanding balls of moss-covered soil instead of pots. Kokedama are a beautiful way to bring greenery into your home and are ideal for apartments or flats with minimal space. On top of everything\, plants are fantastic for mental wellbeing!  \nIn this class\, we will learn how to make them\, decorate them with colourful strings for all pride flags and take then home to brighten our lives.  \n  \nThis event will be half social chats with a bunch of likeminded queer people and half fun\, educational and interactive workshop.

SUMMARY:Pride Warriors – Life Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Canvas: Wrestlers from the Melbourne Wranglers bare their bodies and souls for an evening of artistic exploration and LGBTQIA+ Pride.   \nJoin us for an evening which celebrates the 10 year anniversary of the Melbourne Wranglers Wrestling Club\, as they take off their kit for the sake of art.   \nThe session will consist of 7-8 models\, each taking turns to deliver unique poses for artists to capture the form and beauty of the world’s oldest sport.  \nThe evening will progress from a series of short poses to a series of longer poses\, allowing guests to warm-up their creative skills. Guests are encouraged to bring their own materials\, but there will be equipment available on the night for the cost of a gold coin donation.  \nFunds raised from this event will assist members of the club on their road to competing in the Gay Games 2026\, located in Valencia\, Spain. All support is much appreciated.  \nThis is an untutored life drawing session and artists of all ability levels are welcome. There will an official photographer on the night and artists are asked to refrain from photography out of respect for the models. If you do not want your photo taken\, please let the host know when you arrive.

SUMMARY:Sisterly Acts
DESCRIPTION:Sisterly Acts is a heavenly variety show with a divine mission. In a world where belief is on the brink and glitter is in short supply\, four fabulous sisters are stepping in to save the day—and your soul.  \nJoin Melbourne drag royalty Della Katessen\, HollyPop\, Brenda Bressed\, and Bobbee Pinn as they take to the stage to serve up sermons\, stories\, and sensational performances that will leave you laughing\, reflecting\, and maybe even believing again.  \nThrough music\, comedy\, heartfelt moments\, and some seriously holy talent\, these Sisters of Sass are here to turn doubt into devotion and dish out salvation with a side of sequins. It’s a spiritual revival like no other – equal parts hilarious and heartwarming\, with enough sparkle to light up the heavens.  \nCome witness a divine celebration of drag\, joy\, and the power of chosen family – because sometimes\, the faith we need comes in heels.

SUMMARY:Into the Light
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Rainbow Band presents the first of two art concerts\, “Into the Light”. \nOpposites so often fit together. Seemingly the most obvious of opposites\, light and dark create one another through their very essence. The impact of each\, however\, is often the same. Into the Light is an exploration of light- the photons\, the colour\, the sun\, the mood\, the hope\, but also the crushing intensity and terror that light can bring. \nFeaturing incredible sweeping musical scores\, a performance from Artistic Director and international horn soloist\, Brian KM\, and stirring visual art by Jackson Fumberger\, this is an event not to be missed. \nExperience this performance in the stunning light filled interior of the Victorian Pride Centre.

SUMMARY:MQFF Film Screenings: The Legacy of Venus Xtravaganza
DESCRIPTION:MQFF’s Pride Program opens with a special event to celebrate the legacy of Venus Xtravaganza\, the global icon who rose to fame in the 1991 documentary Paris is Burning. Venus was tragically murdered before the Paris is Burning was released\, and now\, decades later\, I’m Your Venus picks up a trail gone cold as her two families—biological and ballroom—come together to honour her legacy. This moving documentary comes at time in USA history where transgender rights are digressing\, invoking the decades old USA protest cry “Voguing is not a crime! Murder is”. Here Venus’s legacy reminds us that Voguing is an act of resistance as well as an artform.  \nIN-CONVERSATION\nDecolonising Black & Brown Sites of Resistance – looking back to move forward.  \nTo celebrate Venus Xtravaganza’s legacy in connection with the new documentary I’m Your Venus\, MQFF is thrilled to announce a very special in-conversation. \nElyssia Wilson-Heti (FAFSWAG) in-conversation with Mikha Diesel (the House of DIESEL)\, and Angel Furia (mother of the House of Furia). \nHow do we as a community continue to build on our resistance movements – sit in the present\, move into the future and remember the past? Venus is an ancestor; how do we continue to honour her and dismantle the institutional frameworks of harm she navigated? How do we as recipients of cultural spaces birthed by Black and Brown\, trans and queer bodies\, how do we ensure that we don’t perpetuate harm? There is deep entanglement of all the issues the community faces and these often collide in real time – this is reflected in the documentary I’m Your Venus. \nAs one of the pioneering producers from the ballroom community in Tāmaki Makaurau Aotearoa and now retired aunty Elyssia Wilson-Heti will facilitate a conversation about how we continue to decolonise these spaces with members of the ballroom community here in Naarm. \nGather to pay tribute to Venus with this in-conversation with community. \n “I want a car. I want to be with the man I love . . . I want a nice home away from New York I want to get married in church in white . . . I want to be a professional model behind cameras. I want this. This is what I want and I’m going to go for it.” — Venus Xtravaganza\, from Paris Is Burning   \nViewer Advice: contains discussions of transphobic violence\, homophobic violence and family violence.  \nVictorian Premiere  \nI’M YOUR VENUS (2024)  \nDirector: Kimberly Reed  \nCountry: USA  \nLanguage: English  \nCommunity : Queer\, Transgender

SUMMARY:MQFF Film Screenings: Drive Back Home
DESCRIPTION:BAFTA\, two-time Emmy and Tony\, and an Olivier Award actor\, writer\, presenter and producer\, Alan Cumming\, is no stranger to queer audiences. He returns to star in Michael Clowater’s Drive Back Home as the louche Pearly\, who is bailed out of a Toronto prison where he landed for the only kind of public indecency worth the risk by his estranged and cantankerous brother\, Weldon\, played by Charlie Creed-Miles (The Fifth Element\, 1997 and Harry Brown\, 2009).  \nIt’s 1970\, it’s winter\, and our siblings embark on a 1\,000-mile road trip home to New Brunswick in a truck as shaky as their relationship\, stalked by a family history of unspoken regrets and small-town porch-talk.  \nBased on the actual events of his grandfather and great uncle\, writer-director Clowater lets this hysterical and heart-warming narrative unfold at its own pace across the frozen Canadian landscape – an effort that earned the film 2024 Best Canadian Narrative Feature (Audience Choice Award) at the Calgary International Film Festival and play across the international film festival circuit.  \n“There is an undeniable\, gentle warmth to Michael Clowater’s Drive Back Home that defies the frozen Canadian winter backdrop.” – The Queer Review.  \n“Four and a half stars. Michael Clowater has fashioned a film that is both a very Canadian film and a time capsule for the entire world at the time in its treatment of the gay community.”  – In the Seats.  \nViewer Advice: contains depictions of graphic homophobic violence\, homophobia\, family violence and an attempted suicide.
