SUMMARY:Midsumma 2023 at VPC - Archive Armour
DESCRIPTION:Join hosts from the Australian Queer Archives and Transgender Victoria and special guest ‘accidental archivist’ and trans icon\, Julie Peters\, on a creative and interactive journey through queer and trans histories and community archives. \n“The ability to see yourself in the past is essential to forming a sense of belonging in the world\,” Archie Barry wrote in 2018. “It seems now I’ve naturally fallen into a role that many queer and gender diverse people fall into: that of informal researcher. We silently hoard content – URLs\, zines\, ads\, pamphlets\, stickers\, mp3s\, books\, posters – to build a personalised buffer\, a kind of archive armour\, between the self and the cis-hetero world.” \nWith increasing transphobia in Australia and abroad\, and ongoing attempts to divide queer people\, it is an important time for queer and trans communities to build this armour both as individuals and as a community united in solidarity. \nTogether\, we will search through our communities’ histories to find queer and trans care\, hope\, and joy. Your hosts will share their own archivist origin stories\, introduce you to some of their favourite objects and collections\, and help you to get started on your own quests to find and build your own archive armour using the extensive Australian Queer Archives and more collections. \nThis session will be a mix of presentation and low-key interactive small group exercises\, so come ready to share and participate as much as you feel comfortable doing so. \nCo-presented by the Australian Queer Archives and the Victorian Pride Centre

Todd will speak about the Voice to Parliament from First Nations people’s and/or LGBTIQA+ people’s perspectives\, his PhD research and the significance and impacts of this latest referendum for and on Rainbow Mob. \nN’arweet Carolyn Briggs will speak about the social and political context\, journey towards the referendum and potential impacts of a Voice to Parliament from First Nations perspectives. \nProfessor Paula Gerber will unpack the logistics of constitutional reform and also speak about the Voice through an LGBTIQA+ lens – the influence of the Aboriginal civil rights movement on later campaigns for LGBTIQA+ rights\, and the parallels and differences between 2017’s Marriage Equality survey and the Voice referendum. \nSheena Watt is a member of the Victorian Legislative Council for Northern Metropolitan Region. She is the first Aboriginal Australian woman to represent the Australian Labor Party in the Parliament of Victoria. Prior to becoming a member of Parliament\, Sheena was an Executive Manager at AFL SportsReady and on the Board of Directors for some of the most important community organisations in Victoria. \nRegistrations for this event are free\, and the panel discussion will be live-streamed via JOY Media’s website for people who are unable to participate in person.
