SUMMARY:Exhibition: Put Your Head On My Shoulder by Andrew Chan
DESCRIPTION:Set in the early hours of the morning in a karaoke bar\, ‘Put Your Head on My Shoulder’ explores loneliness and intimacy\, inspired by artist Andrew Chan’s experience as a queer migrant living alone and searching for connection. Despite having a close-knit group of friends\, loneliness has manifested in various ways for him\, from seeking intimacy through casual hookups to binge eating. \nResearch by Ending Loneliness shows that 1 in 3 Australians experience loneliness\, a statistic that made Andrew feel less isolated in his own experience. This project invites the public to reflect on loneliness and its impact on themselves and those around them. Through interactive installations\, participants can share their own experiences with loneliness via written words. By fostering dialogue\, Andrew hopes to encourage openness and promote seeking help.

In a world where homosexuality remains illegal in over 74 countries\, the piece raises a poignant question: how far can a queer person go to fit social\, political\, and cultural norms in order to survive?

DESCRIPTION:Another Quiet Protest—stillness fills the space\, an atmosphere thick with both tension and tenderness. Over a dozen gentle warriors stand suspended in time\, their surfaces etched with the thoughts of thousands. These fictitious figures speak volumes through silence. Historical slogans and words of affirmation are boldly scribed across their forms\, echoing decades of queer resistance and resilience. Bathed in the shifting hues of the progressive rainbow colours\, they carry a quiet\, powerful message of hope: we are here\, we have always been here\, and we will not disappear. \nThis body of work explores the quieter side of protest—those moments of stillness that carry deep meaning. While queer activism has often taken to the streets through marches\, riots\, and vigils\, it also lives in subtle gestures: in the courage to exist\, to affirm one’s identity\, to hold space for others. From the Stonewall Riots to ACT UP\, to the ongoing fight for trans rights\, queer protest is not only loud—it is patient\, persistent\, and profoundly human. These figures do not shout; they listen. They do not march; they hold ground. In an era where LGBTQ+ rights are once again under threat\, their quiet presence becomes an act of defiance—a protest against erasure\, and a whisper of what still can be. \nWith thanks to the Australian Queer Archives for access to historical materials informing the language throughout the work

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is a joyful tribute to the diversity of dogs and the deep comfort they offer—especially within queer communities. I had a lot of fun making these pieces. It was a timely relief during a period when I was facing transphobia around my touring exhibition of Another Quiet Protest from a curator and gallery manager of a council run gallery. Dogs ask nothing of us but to be ourselves. For many queer people\, they are chosen family\, loyal companions who love without condition. Over 60% of LGBT!Q+ individuals live with pets\, and it’s no wonder. Dogs remind us to come home to ourselves. August\, which includes International Dog Day and whats getting recognised as National Dog Month\, is a fitting time to honour their joy\, resilience\, and steadfast presence. These works celebrate dogs not just as pets\, but as everyday co-pilots\, quiet protectors\, and bearers of joy—who sit beside us\, whoever we are\, and remind us we’re never truly alone.

SUMMARY:‘Diva Worship’ by Hannah Brontë
DESCRIPTION:Come worship at the altar of divas! \nA photographic collaboration with queer femmes and the sun. Harmonising the channel of cyanotype as both ritual and process\, the work explores the act of queer self-portraiture as a radical practice of self-reclamation and embodied power\, honouring the sacred Queer Femme. \nQueer femmes are an essential part of the ecosystem that sustains our community. In their diversity\, strength\, and fluidity\, they embody the resilience of those who move through the world with quiet yet powerful grace. These femmes\, whether seen or unseen\, hold the layers of both defiance and tenderness that make them extraordinary forces of nature. \nABOUT THE ARTIST: \nBrontë is an Artist \, Doula and Creatrix dreaming and swimming on Kombumerri/Yugambeh Country (Gold Coast). \nBrontë’s practice is rooted in pleasure as a guiding force — pleasure in colour\, in connection\, in imagination\, in the act of creating itself. \nBrontë’s works emerge as dreamscapes that blur the edges of the present with visions of the future\, saging what is to come and allowing it to blend into the here and now. These dreamscapes invite audiences to soften\, to feel\, and to open to the possibilities of a life infused with sacred rage\, wildness\, beauty and joy. \nWorking across video\, text\, textiles\, and sound\, she layers mediums to create kaleidoscopic worlds of sensation and presence. Recent collaborations with holistic and spiritual healers have expanded her explorations into colour therapy\, grounding audiences while also shifting their energy toward vibrancy and renewal. \nBrontë’s work often turns toward birth — both literal and metaphorical. As a doula\, she honours the thresholds of all birthing people\, and within her art practice she explores birth as a continual process of becoming: the seeds of pregnancy and gestation\, the birthing of ideas\, communities\, chosen families\, and futures. She infuses her practice with the magic of femme queer ways of knowing\, bringing softness\, play\, camp revelry and power into every layer of her work. Her art is therefore not only about representation but about transformation — an embodied reminder that every act of creation is a form of arrival. With influences from her work as a doula\, DJ\, and curator of gatherings/experiences\, Brontë extends her practice beyond the gallery into collective spaces of celebration\, healing\, and play. \nAt its heart\, her work is an exploration of how art-making can open portals — dreamscapes that teach us to live more pleasurably\, more connected\, and more attuned to the futures we are already calling into being. SUMMARY:Hey Kitty!
DESCRIPTION:In January 2026\, my life changed in an instant after a serious spinal accident. For weeks I lay motionless in a hospital bed\, uncertain whether I would ever be able to make sculptures again. During that time my mind wandered through memories\, gratitude\, disappointment\, hope\, and the people who shaped my life. I thought about those who let me down\, but even more importantly\, I reflected on the kindness of the people who stood beside me—especially one remarkable person\, Nicole- whose support helped me through my darkest days. \nI also found myself thinking about animals and the comfort they have always brought me. Cats kept appearing in my thoughts—their incredible resilience\, their quiet ability to comfort without asking for anything in return\, their cheeky personalities\, gentle purrs\, tiny paws and magnificent whiskers. There is something wonderfully healing about cats\, and somewhere during those long weeks I even started thinking that perhaps it was time to welcome one back into my life. \nWhen I was finally given permission to return to sculpting again\, I knew exactly what I wanted to make. Cats. Every sculpture in Hey Kitty was created as part of my recovery. Each piece became a small celebration of healing\, resilience\, hope\, and the privilege of being able to create again. \nThe title of this exhibition carries its own special meaning. Hey Kitty isn’t just a nod to my feline subjects—it is also deeply personal. “Kitty” was the nickname my big sister Jill gave me when we were children\, and she called me that throughout her life. Since losing her suddenly five years ago\, hearing those words has become one of my most treasured memories of her. Naming this exhibition Hey Kitty is a small way of honouring that connection while celebrating the joy\, resilience and comfort that inspired these sculptures. \nThe exhibition will run with International Cat Day on 8 August\, this exhibition celebrates not only our fascination with these remarkable creatures\, but also the strength we discover in ourselves through life’s unexpected challenges.
