SUMMARY:Nomads Outdoors Group - Brimbank Park Loop Track Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Brimbank Park Loop is a 10 km trail located near the airport in Melbourne’s North West\, that follows part of the upper Maribyrnong River and Brimbank Park. \nGRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 2: Moderate\, approximately 10 km\, circuit walk with a total rise of 150m (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). \nACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Brimbank Park sits approximately 55 metres below the surrounding western plains. It was first settled by Europeans in the 1830s. The name is thought to have originated from the farmers moving their sheep and cattle ‘around the brim of the bank’ of the Maribyrnong River. \nThis is a loop walk starting at Green Gully. The route uses a combination of sealed and well maintained gravel paths. There is one short\, but fairly steep climb on the walk (70m)\, plus the ascent out of the valley at the end. \nA wetlands area has been extensively revegetated. Birds commonly seen in the park include blue wrens\, yellow-tailed thornbills\, flame robins\, parrots and galahs\, and a variety of water birds. Residing in the river red gums are brushtail and ringtail possums. You may see a blue-tongued lizard sunbaking\, or catch sight of some swamp wallabies. \nThe former Dodd farm is of regional historical significance for its association with the original European settlement and farming of the Maribyrnong Valley.

SUMMARY:Nomads Outdoors Group - Naturist Beach Day at Somers and Optional Social Later in Hastings
DESCRIPTION:All welcome; enjoy a relaxed day out at the Somers Beach! \nGRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 2: Easy 7 km circuit walk (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). It is a pleasant 3.5 km walk along the beach from the car park in Somers towards Sandy Point to a good setup place in the sand dunes\, far enough away from civilization to permit swimming and sunbathing au naturale. The sand is fairly firm. Walking time is generally about 55 minutes to the setup place. Most of the beach walk can be done minus clothes once we get past the local dog walkers on the beach. Of course it is another approx 3.5 km back to the cars at the end of the day.

SUMMARY:Nomads Outdoors Group - 2026 New Year's Day Picnic at Burnley Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a leisurely picnic and explore one of Inner Melbourne’s historic treasures\, Burnley Gardens\, located in the traditional country of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung People. \nGRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 1: Easy – picnic together with a short walk to explore the extensive range of flora in the Gardens (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). \nACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The Burnley Gardens are a great escape for inner Melbourne\, even though they are little-known and difficult to find. Open to the public 24/7\, they are tucked away within the heritage buildings of the Melbourne University campus on a remote bend in the Yarra and accessed via Yarra Boulevard. Created in 1863 for horticultural research and teaching\, they contain more than 1000 species of plants and have some of the inner city’s oldest trees. \nNow part of the University of Melbourne since 1997\, much of the late 19th-century form of the Gardens remains\, though with extensive additional building\, including a rockery by Ellis Stone\, a new stream and pond system by Robert Boyle in the native garden\, and a courtyard by Steve Mullany\, a Californian landscape designer.

SUMMARY:Nomads Outdoors Group – Gardiners Creek and Anniversary Trail Loop
DESCRIPTION:This great suburban trail is about 14 kilometres east of the centre of Melbourne. This looped route begins from the Burwood train station. \nGRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 3: Easy-Medium 14 km circuit walk (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System). \nACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: From the station\, we’ll follow parts of the Gardiners Creek and Anniversary Trails\, both well-maintained paths shared by pedestrians and cyclists. Although long-ish\, the trail is easy and quite level. And there are several spots where you can cut the walk short. \nGardiners Creek\, originally known as Kooyongkoot Creek\, is an urban stream in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne\, and part of the Yarra River catchment. Apart from a few sparse surviving remnant riparian bushlands\, the majority of the creek’s length has been heavily urbanised\, in much the same way as other Melbourne eastern suburban streams such as the Mullum Mullum Creek and Koonung Creek. The Gardiners Creek Trail follows the creek for most of its length. \nAnniversary Trail\, also known as The Outer Circle Trail\, is a shared use path for cyclists and pedestrians\, which partly follows the Alamein line through the inner eastern suburbs of Melbourne. \nBy linking these two trails and a bit of the ‘burbs\, we can do a loop walk from and back to Burwood Station.

SUMMARY:Nomads Outdoors Group - Rawson / Walhalla Region Cup Day cabin weekend
DESCRIPTION:** There are no further QUEEN beds available AT PRESENT\, but there are plenty of BUNK BEDS. If you would like a Queen Bed\, please get either a BUNK BED ticket or a WAITLIST ticket\, and indicate what you would like via the “Further details about what you would like” question. ** \nEnjoy a long weekend of activities in the Rawson / Walhalla region over the Melbourne Cup Day holiday weekend\, from Friday 31st October to Tuesday 4th November. This follows the very successful event held there over the King’s Birthday weekend in 2024. \nGRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Various\, depending on the activities undertaken – a range of activities will be on offer. \nACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: We have booked out the Mountain Rivers Lodge at Rawson\, which has six standalone units plus a comfortable communal lounge\, dining area and external decking with BBQ. Each self-contained unit has a queen size bed plus 2 bunks (upper and lower). We’ve also provisionally booked additional bunkhouse accommodation in the expectation that the accommodation in The Lodge will be insufficient. People staying elsewhere than in The Lodge will probably need to bring their own linen (sleeping bag\, pillow and towel). \nLike last time\, a vintage train ride with the Walhalla Goldfields Railway and gold mine tour of the Long Tunnel Mine will be offered (on Sunday this time)\, but alternative activities will be on offer for those who don’t wish to do those. The train and mine tour require prior booking so we need your early commitment. Note that the mine is not as claustrophobic as many mines\, since you can walk into it via a horizontal tunnel drilled into the hillside\, and there are some quite cavernous spaces inside.

SUMMARY:Nomads Outdoors Group – Wilson Botanic Park Ramble (Berwick)
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a pleasant outing in a little-known botanic park on the outskirts of Melbourne – one of Melbourne’s hidden treasures! This event is designed to be easily accessible by Metro train. \nGRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 2: Easy approximately 9 km\, circuit walk (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System)\, mostly on off-road paths\, but with a number of ascents and descents. \nACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The Wilson Botanic Park is a total gem in the historic town of Berwick\, a town that has now been engulfed by metropolitan Melbourne. Not only is the park incredibly photogenic\, including views over Melbourne\, it is also of significance for its geology and important fossil discoveries. \nThe area has an interesting geological history starting with ancient sedimentary layers from when the area was covered by the ocean\, followed by periods of volcanic activity\, with the most recent\, and violent\, eruption being some 22 million years ago\, resulting in large deposits of basalt (bluestone). Fossils discovered here tell us that the region has had both tropical and temperate forests in bygone eras. The fossil discoveries at the park are significant because flowering and coniferous plants\, tropical and temperate species\, and micro and macro specimens have all been found. It’s the only known fossil site that contains specimens of both Nothofagus and Eucalyptus and is of significant geoheritage importance because it is where the oldest usable Eucalypt fossils have been found in Australia\, which has been important for our understanding of the evolution of the modern Australian flora. \nIn 1859 William Wilson began quarrying bluestone from the site\, since it had the highest quality basalt in the vicinity of Melbourne. The quarry operated almost continually up to 1976. In 1973\, the Wilsons donated 17 hectares to the City of Casey\, and in 1985 the council purchased a further 13.34 hectares\, then in 1992 the 39 hectare Wilson Botanic Park was opened. \nThe City of Casey has sensitively and intelligently developed the park with many points of interest for humans\, birds and the local fauna. Our circuit will begin and end at the Berwick Railway Station. We’ll initially walk along leafy Gloucester Avenue to the main street of Berwick\, then take a tree-lined path to Wilson Botanic Park. There we’ll initially make a circuit of the two lakes\, with optional stops for coffee and toilets. Afterwards we’ll climb to the rim of the park for great views over surrounding suburbs. (Note: the park looks a little like a conventional volcano\, but the “crater” was formed more by quarrying than from volcanic activity). \nUpon completing our rim circuit\, we’ll return to the town via Kramer St and the Pioneers Park. A warming beverage can be had in High Street prior to our return to the train station.
