Alice Borthwick-Peters – Sexologist
About
My name is Alice Borthwick-Peters (she/her) and I am a trained sex therapist with a background in social work. My professional experience is primarily in family violence, but I have also worked in homelessness, mental health, youth work and alcohol and other drugs. I am warm, empathetic, open-minded and compassionate. As a sex therapist, my priority is trying to make sure that I create a safe and comfortable space for people to explore and be vulnerable. I endeavour to be anti-oppressive in my practice, and recognise the importance of learning, unlearning, reflecting and challenging my beliefs. I have a particular passion for working with the LGBTIQA+ community and people with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses.
Sex therapy (also referred to as ‘psychosexual therapy’) is a form of specialist talk theory which aims to help people to explore and understand their sexuality or variations or discrepancies in their sexual function. Anyone can partake in sex therapy, whether they are an individual, in a couple, or in a non-monogamous relationship. Social stigmas about sex can make starting sex therapy feel daunting, but sex therapists are trained to provide a safe space in which to have discussions about difficult topics.
