12. Atrium (base of staircase)

The Atrium is the spectacular heart of the Pride Centre. Shaped like an emu egg – a native bird and symbol of the Boon Wurrung Peoples – this space underlines the collaborative ‘town hall’ atmosphere of the Pride Centre, and the sense of both reflection and possibility in the building. The skylight even has the appearance of a cracked shell, ready for the emergence of LGBTIQA+ communities into the light.

The stairs are used as both a stage – for various events, such as drag shows, speeches, choirs, and DJs – and as event seating, and a meeting place for resident organisations to take team photos or even have lunch!
