SUMMARY:Yeah the Boys – Holden Sheppard in conversation with Richard Watts
DESCRIPTION:Join Hares and Hyenas for a discussion and book signing to celebrate the release of Holden Sheppard’s new novel Yeah The Boys. \nAward-winning Western Australian author Holden Sheppard returns to the world of his bestselling debut Invisible Boys with Yeah the Boys: a bold\, propulsive new novel about male friendship\, masculinity\, modern gay life and being a closeted gay male AFL player. Unapologetic and unforgettable\, this latest release is Sheppard at the height of his powers. \nRaw\, brash and fiercely tender\, Yeah the Boys is the story of three young men finding their way back to each other – and discovering their own complicated ways of becoming men. This new novel is the rebellious older brother to Invisible Boys\, moving decisively into adult terrain. The characters are now in their mid-twenties\, navigating sex\, money\, drugs\, fame\, politics and the messy realities of city life. It is Holden Sheppard’s most provocative and hard-edged book yet. \n‘A shout in the night and a shot in the arm of a book… a reverent depiction of gay culture\, masculinity and the men that boys become\, warts and all.’ – James Acker\, author of The Long Run

SUMMARY:Launch of Divergences: An Anthology Of Neurodissident Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Hares & Hyenas for the book launch of Divergences: An Anthology Of Neurodissident Worlds \nCome on down as we introduce you to the book along with some live readings. Free vegan sweets (with gluten-free options) by little sweet tings\, along with a video adaptation of Michiel Teeuw’s text Skim\, Skier\, Stim\, which shows co-stimming with the ocean. \nDivergences is a first of its kind: a literary collection of posthuman neurodivergent art and writing. But what makes it extra special is the punkish vein of neurodissidence throughout that refuses assimilation to a neuronormative world. Divergences does not approach neurodivergence as diagnosis or identity\, but instead becomes a lens through which the norm itself turns strange—an alternate perceptual logic capable of reshaping how we think about intimacy\, infrastructure\, technology\, and care. \nAcross essays\, poems\, stories\, memoir\, and hybrid texts\, Divergences asks what happens when perception runs on different circuitry: when language fractures into vibration and pulse\, when politeness and coherence reveal themselves as imposed postures rather than neutral baselines. This collection resists sentimental narratives of difference. There is no recovery arc here. Nervous systems appear instead as sites of conflict and capacity—hyper-attentive\, analytical\, erotically charged\, exhausted\, lucid. Divergences does not explain neurodissidence from a distance. It inhabits it—rigorous\, volatile\, and formally alive.

Stan will share some of his juicy and at times solacious insights into his life from his humble beginnings in the Welsh valleys to working with some of the best legs in the business at the glamourous Les Girls in Sydney and Melbourne. \nWhich famous British actor did Stan have a summer fling with in England? Which world-famous female impersonator did Stan have a love/hate relationship with? Who did Stan love and not love working with? How did he get his role in Alvin Purple? How did Stan go from the bright lights of living in Melbourne and Sydney to living a quieter life in the Northern Rivers? Stan will attempt to answer all these questions and more at Hares & Hyenas. Books will also be on sale which Stan will gladly sign.

SUMMARY:From Grindr to Blindr
DESCRIPTION:Go on an unforgettable date with Karan Nagrani\, aka That Blind Guy – keynote speaker\, content creator\, disability advocate\, and yes\, a blind influencer (who knew that was a thing?). With his tagline “Pretty Fly for a Blind Guy”\, Karan takes you on a journey that’s hilarious\, heartbreaking\, and deeply human.  \nWhat’s it like coming out – not once\, not twice\, but three times as a blind\, gay person of colour? It’s not a journey for the faint-hearted\, but Karan walks it with courage\, sass\, and a wicked sense of humour.  \nA born storyteller and natural comedian\, Karan brings unfiltered honesty to everything he does – whether he’s speaking to packed events or cracking jokes on Instagram. His story of gradually losing his sight is raw and real: how would you cope knowing your world was slowly fading to black?  But this isn’t just a story of loss –  it’s one of transformation. Emerging from the shadows of vision loss and mental health struggles\, Karan has become a passionate voice for inclusion and disability rights\, shaking up stereotypes and challenging what it means to truly see people.  \nNamed Community Ambassador for Midsumma Festival (2024\, 2025 and 2026)\, ChillOut Festival Ambassador (2023)\, and Darwin Pride Ambassador (2024)\, Karan is on a mission to make the LGBTQIA+ community more accessible\, inclusive\, and kind.  \nSo… ready for a date you won’t forget?

SUMMARY:Generations Queer: Up the Lezzos
DESCRIPTION:“Up the Lezzos!” was the triumphant cry of a newly out Kate Rowe as she was thrown into a paddy wagon at the first Mardi Gras. Fifty years later she would launch her memoir How the Fuck Would I Know? at Qtopia\, which now occupies the police station where she was once locked up. That book would document a life full of unexpected turns\, from a lavender marriage to help a gay friend in need\, healing from addiction\, finding her strength through extreme sports and learning the ukulele. \nNick Henderson\, historian\, researcher and collections manager at the Australian Queer Archives will host a discussion with Kate on the personal and political changes in lesbian life since that charged night in 1978.

SUMMARY:Queer Youth Histories Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:QUEER YOUTH HISTORIES \nA panel conversation about growing up LGBTIQA+ over time \nThe past fifty years has seen profound changes in the everyday lives of many LGBTIQA+ young people. The 1970s saw growing activist struggles for LGBTIQA+ youth rights\, and today there is more recognition\, rights and representation of LGBTIQA+ young people than ever before. But what do we know about these different historical experiences of people growing up LGBTIQA+? What was life like for LGBTIQA+ young people before the decriminalisation of homosexuality\, the availability of gender affirming healthcare or the legalisation of gay marriage? How did LGBTIQA+ young people meet each other in the past\, without social media\, smart phones\, or the internet? What experiences are common across the generations\, and what’s different?  \nYou are invited to come along to Queer Youth Histories – a panel conversation about growing up LGBTIQA+ over time – to learn about some people’s diverse experiences\, and to reflect on what is gained by learning about these histories\, and what is lost when these histories are suppressed or neglected. \nJoin us to celebrate the publication of the new book which draws together accounts of growing up queer from people born in the 1970s and 1990s\, Queer Generations: LGBTQ Growing Up\, Belonging and Sexual Citizenship (Marshall et al.\, Bloomsbury\, 2025).  The book will be launched by Joe Ball\, the Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities.  \nThis event will also be an opportunity to learn more about our current research project exploring what LGBTIQA+ young people think about LGBTIQA+ history today\, and how young people (aged 16-25) can get involved in LGBTIQA+ Youth History workshops as part of this research at the Australian Queer Archives (queeryouthhistories.com). Joining the Commissioner will be a panel of queer social\, historical and cultural researchers\, including Daniel Marshall and Tinonee Pym (Adelaide University)\, Timothy Jones (La Trobe University)\, Mary Lou Rasmussen and Alistair Ott (Australian National University).  \n Come along for a lively Q&A about how growing up LGBTIQA+ has changed (and not) over time\, and what changes still need to happen! \n
