Join us for a free information session with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), here to help our community navigate the 2026 Census. This session is about making sure LGBTIQA+ people feel informed, safe and confident filling out their form — whoever they live with, however they identify.

What we’ll cover:

  • An overview of the 2026 Census: what it is, why participation matters, and how Census data helps shape the decisions, services and policies that support communities across Australia.
  • The new Census questions on sex and gender — what’s changed, what the questions actually ask, and what they mean for how you respond.
  • How to fill out the Census safely if you’re not out to everyone in your household, including the option to get your own Census number and complete a separate, private form.
  • A run-through of the accessible ways to complete the form, for anyone who needs them — online, paper, Braille, large print, Auslan, audio and translated versions.
  • There will be plenty of time for questions.

Who’s presenting:

Kristal Baker, State Lead for People Living with Disability and LGBTIQ+, Australian Bureau of Statistics

Jacqueline Melville, Support Officer, Australian Bureau of Statistics

Who this is for:

LGBTIQA+ community members who want clarity on the new sex and gender questions and how to navigate the Census safely, whether you’re filling it out alone, with a partner, with family, or with housemates. Everyone is welcome.

This is a free event, please RSVP to secure your spot.
