Pride Month

MQFF Pride Screenings, The Duke of Burgundy poster with date, time and location for Pride Month

Cult director Peter Strickland’s (In Fabric, 2018) valentine to surreal ‘70s Euro-erotica turns ten this year – this calls for an anniversary viewing of quite possibly the 21st century’s most delicious sapphic screen romance!

In a European village in an indeterminate year, where all the inhabitants are well-heeled women drawn to lepidopterology (i.e., the study of butterflies, per the film’s title), Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen, star of Danish political TV series, Borgen) and Evelyn (Chiara D’Anna) lead lives of ritualistic ecstasy and agony, daily enacting routines of dominance and submission. But, as with any sort of relationship, things can run the risk of becoming stale…

With a luscious dream-pop score from Cat’s Eyes perfectly attuned to Strickland’s trademark synaesthetic approach to cinema – note the “Perfume by Je suis Gizella” credit during the opening titles! – The Duke of Burgundy still stands, ten years on, as peak-sensual cinema!
