35 Years of Women's Circus

2 December 2026 – 11 January 2027

This exhibition marks 35 years of Women’s Circus, a proudly queer, intersectional feminist arts organisation based in Melbourne’s West. Featuring archival photos, journals, show memorabilia and video footage, this retrospective celebrates the bold legacy of Women’s Circus, who have been empowering women, trans and gender diverse people through circus, community and connection since 1991.

Women’s Circus has been empowering people of marginalised genders through our social circus and creative programs since 1991. Starting out as a safe space for women who were survivors of sexual violence, Women’s Circus and POW (Performing Older Women’s Circus) have always had a strong lesbian presence in our membership. A proudly queer organisation, we have grown over the years and now welcome all folks of marginalised genders, offering a safe and supportive environment for trans and gender diverse folks to discover circus, build trust and for some reclaim their bodies.

Our members over the years have fought hard for both women’s rights and the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. Some of those members who started at the very beginning are still training circus with us, now in their 70s.

Women’s Circus in an iconic community arts organisation from the West of Melbourne that has been telling queer feminist stories for over three decades. We look forward to sharing our rich history and stories with the wider community.
