Akbay Psychology
About
Akbay Psychology is a private clinical psychology practice for LGBTQIA+ community members, particularly those from CALD and indigenous backgrounds, founded by clinical psychologist Arthur De Jesus (he/him). Based in Prahran, we provide individual therapy and ADHD/Autism assessment services for adults (18+) either in-person or via online telehealth.
Arthur identifies as a gay cisgender man of Filipino ethnicity, who is fluent in his first language of Tagalog, as well as in conversational Spanish. He is a registered clinical psychologist with postgraduate qualifications in clinical psychology (MClinPsych), and has been a practicing psychologist since 2022 in public and community health settings, as well as in private clinics, before starting his own solo practice. He is passionate about helping his clients develop self-awareness and build emotion regulation skills, and has interests and provides treatment for:
-
Anxiety (panic, phobias, social anxiety)
-
Trauma and stress (acute, complex, PTSD)
-
Men’s mental health (family, work, body image)
-
Depression and mood-related issues
-
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) coaching and support
- Relationships and interpersonal issues
-
Self-esteem, self-confidence, perfectionism
- Racial and cultural identity concerns
-
LGBTQIA-related concerns
Arthur’s theoretical practice is informed by social and relational frameworks that includes attachment-based and trauma-informed models (polyvagal theory), strengths-based approaches/psychosocial model, and information processing model/cognitive theory. He also draws on a range of evidence-based treatment approaches, such as Schema Therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), emotions-focused therapy (EFT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), and interpersonal psychodynamic therapy (IPT).
Akbay Psychology accepts clients under a GP-MHCP who are eligible for Medicare rebates, private health insurance, TAC, WorkCover, Victims of Crime (VOCFAS), and self-managed NDIS participants.
Outside of clinical practice, Arthur is an advocate for improving community-based access to mental health services, addressing cultural stigma of mental illness in Asian communities, and participating in professional development discourse. He enjoys the many cultural and artistic experiences of Melbourne, travelling outdoors, and spending time with his family and friends.
We are registered as: Sole Trader.
