Biography
Two times TEDx speaker and award winning poet, Fleassy Malay is an internationally renowned, evocative and powerful spoken word artist, speaker and coach. A queer and neurodiverse parent, they are a global advocate for Women’s rights, LGBTQI+ visibility, and a fierce voice for the power of authenticity and courage as a social change tool.
Founder and CEO of Melbourne’s acclaimed Women's Spoken Word organisation and monthly event, Mother Tongue Poetry. As an educator, Fleassy facilitates and mentors on courage, confidence, and public speaking through their own programs and through partnering with organisations and groups. They are a passionate, powerful, vulnerable, and honest performer who's words, workshops and courses leave a profound impression.
A British artist now based in Melbourne, Australia; they studied at the famous London stage institution, The BRIT School, and have toured internationally.
Fleassy has a theatrical and yet deeply authentic performance style, renowned for captivating audiences with depth, honesty, and humour.
In 2017 she published her book, Sex and God, performed internationally, was a grand slam finalist and represented Australia at the National Poetry Slam, USA. In 2018 her poem, Witches, went viral on International Women's Day with over 3.5 million views to date. In 2020 she successfully crowdfunded her latest book Virago: A Poetic Manifesto, reaching over 200% of her original goal and pre-selling over 300 copies across 4 continents. In 2022 Fleassy co-wrote a poem with a group of women living with HIV for Positive Women Victoria which was screened in Fed Square for World AIDs Day. Fleassy has published 2 poetry books, a children's book, an adults colouring book and two albums of spoken word. In 2022 she won Reciter Of The Year at the National Folk Festival, in 2023 her show Fierce-Gentle was awarded two Judges Picks at the Melbourne Fringe Festival.
