Next steps in the realisation of the Victorian Pride Centre were laid out at a community information session on 17 July.
Attended by representatives from the LGBTIQ community, the Minister for Equality Martin Foley MP opened proceedings by acknowledging the significant work undertaken to date in the development of the Victorian Pride Centre.
“As we progress in due course to laying the foundations of the Centre, we are building on the resilience of the LGBTIQ community and its unwavering commitment to achieve equality,” Minister Foley said.
Minister Foley announced a further $150,000 in funding towards the development of the Victorian virtual Pride Centre, a vibrant, resource rich online community hub for the LGBTIQ community.
St Kilda-based firms Grant Amon Architects and Brearley Architects and Urbanists, Pride Centre design competition winners presented detailed drawings and 3D models. The building is set to be a beautiful and iconic addition to the Melbourne architectural landscape. Detailed design drawings will be finalised and the construction contract will be let in September. The planning approval process has been expedited with a goal of achieving approval by October.
At the event, Stuart Kollmorgen, Deputy Chair and Chair of the Fundraising committee launched the Victorian Pride Centre’s fundraising strategy. Mr Kollmorgen called upon the LGBTIQ community and allies to take up the challenge in raising the gap funds required to meet project costs.
“We are building more than a building, we are building a community, a future, resilience and equality and we need your support to build it,” Mr Kollmorgen said.
Jude Munro AO, Chair of the Victorian Pride Centre board closed formal proceedings, thanking major LGBTIQ organisations and supporters for their continued commitment to the Victorian Pride Centre. In a symbolic gesture Ms Munro presented each major supporter with an umbrella, adding that The Victorian Pride Centre will offer the community a shelter, a safe and inclusive home. Tenant MOU’s, lease agreements, operational plans, increased communication and enhanced online resource development were amongst the next steps listed by Ms Munro.
Commissioner for Gender and Sexuality, Ro Allen was also acknowledged by Ms Munro and when asked, what does the Victorian Pride Centre mean to you? The Commissioner replied by saying it will be a place of support and services, a place to connect with friends, and a symbol to Victoria and the world that the LGBTIQ community is here and proud.
