Celebrating Six Months of Pride and Justice: JP Signing Services

The Justice of the Peace (JP) services at the Victorian Pride Centre has marked a significant milestone as it celebrates six months of services to the LGBTIQA+ community. This initiative has transformed the landscape of document signing services in Melbourne’s CBD, offering a welcoming alternative to traditional venues.

A New Community Resource

On February 2, 2025, coinciding with the 30th Anniversary of Midsumma’s Pride March, the Document Signing Centre at the Victorian Pride Centre (DSC@VPC) officially opened its doors. The launch was a momentous occasion, attended by prominent figures including Victoria’s Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner, Ro Allen, and the Commissioner for LGTBIQA+ communities, Joe Ball.

Following the opening ceremony, over 30 JPs made history by participating in the Pride March for the first time. Marching behind a banner that proclaimed “Witnessing Inclusion. Certifying Pride,” these dedicated volunteers showcased their commitment to serving the LGBTIQA+ community. Despite the scorching 38-degree heat, the march saw an impressive turnout of 17,000 participants, turning Fitzroy Street into a vibrant celebration of LGBTIQA+ communities.

The success of the DSC@VPC was further acknowledged on March 15, 2025, when coordinators Kathy Cooney JP and Dean Beck JP received the Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices Meritorious Service Award. This honour recognises their outstanding contributions to both the Pride and Victorian communities. RVAHJ President Rodney Lavin JP FRVAHJ presented the awards, with the CEO of the Victorian Pride Centre, Paul Horwell, congratulating Kathy and Dean on their commitment and service to the LGBTIAQ+ communities.

Operating every Saturday from 12 noon to 4 pm (excluding public holiday weekends), a roster of 15 JPs delivers free document witnessing, certification of identity documents and the execution of necessary paperwork. Anyone needing the trusted services of a JP can walk in with no appointment, knowing they are in a judgment-free, safe environment. DSC@VPC has seen to become an essential service for the local community.

As the DSC@VPC continues to grow, they stand as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives, bridging gaps in essential services and fostering inclusivity.
